Faculty Spotlight: Cheryl King

Cheryl King, Administrative Assistant Program Manager

After spending just a few moments talking with Cheryl King, it's easy to see why she is a student favorite. From her enthusiasm for the classroom to her extensive experience, everything she does is to help her students.

"I've been with Hickey College for 33 years. I've moved into various positions throughout that time, but I always wanted to stay in the classroom," said King,  "I thoroughly enjoy teaching and seeing our students grow."  In December 2003, she was honored with the Governor’s Award for Excellence in Teaching by the state of Missouri.

As the program manager of the office administration program, King's responsibilities include ensuring the  program courses stay relevant to employer needs. To accomplish that goal, King is an active participant in several local and national organizations, including National Business Education Association, St. Louis Area Business Education Association, and International Association of Administrative Professionals (IAAP). "I serve as a faculty advisor for the IAP. We are really active with the group and our students greatly benefit from the opportunity  to attend workshops and network in the community," said King.

"Something I love about the office administration program is that it's really a career where you can go anywhere with. Every industry needs the skills provided by trained administrative professionals," said King. Under King's tutelage, students spend time learning computer skills, creating professional documents like powerpoint, and crucial presentation skills.

"The Hickey College student is more focused on wanting a career. Our programs give them those skills and they can graduate quickly, but in that short time, we really do become  our own community. I stay in touch with many graduates and I often see my former students when I am out," said King.
